The
Princeton Battlefield Society is
a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to the
enhancement, preservation, and development of Princeton
Battlefield State Park and surrounding lands. The Battlefield
and Clarke House Museum are National Historic Landmarks
and the Society members assist in the interpretation,
public education, research, grounds maintenance, and
fund raising connected with the historical events and
natural features of the Park.
Founded
in 1970 by local citizens concerned by the potential loss
of historic land, the Society has worked with the State of
New Jersey in developing park facilities, in the acquisition
of additional historic grounds, and in the restoration, furnishing
and interpretation of the 18th century Thomas Clarke House.
Members have been active in presenting battlefield tours,
lectures, and living history programs. An ongoing archeology
project is shedding new light on the history of the site.
Future
projects of the Society, working with the New Jersey State
Park Service, include:
- Rebuilding
the 18th century Clarke Farm barn and stables to
be used as a visitors center. Below ground
galleries will present the history of the Battle
of Princeton and provide meeting space. The above
ground barn and stable will restore the 18th century
appearance of the Clarke Farm while providing visitor
services, a film auditorium, and gift shop.
- Develop
permanent collections of paintings, maps, weapons,
and artifacts associated with the Battle of Princeton
and the American Revolution.
- Acquire,
for preservation and/or restoration, property encompassing
the original ground of the January 3, 1777 battle.
- Increase
the variety of living history demonstrations and
public programs.
- Continue
the restoration of the Clarke House and farm. The
will include developing a permanent collection
of 18th century furnishings, textiles, and domestic
and farm tools. Also the addition of appropriate
gardens, orchards, and fences.
- Increase
the holdings of the on-site research library and
improve the public accessibility of historic information.
- Conduct
on-site archeology.
- Clear
brush, trails, and restore landscape to its 18th
century appearance.
